Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Aint been able to get on the computer much this week but here is a brief update with more pics!! I finished fabricating the battery box, and decided to narrow it to a bit. This means I cannot fit a larger battery any more if I need to, but I'll cross that bridge if it ever happens! http://i645.photo...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Prof only the front mount is just done for now, but I am going to add some triangular gussets behind it to the oil tank. Once the battery box is welded up it will form the rest of the structure, then the whole arrangement bolted up with two 3/8 bolts to the plate I've welded to behind the cross-tube...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Prof I got a secret in store for the pipes!! Time for another long post guys... Spent Saturday down in working with Prof in The Chopper Shed. I wanted to make some thumbscrews for my Keihin Butterfly carburettor that I'm using. The right fuel tank sits right on top of the carburetor so ordinarily an...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Well we got a long overdue update guys!! Been madly working away and finished the rear fender. All that's left to do is make the seat to match it, and do a taller, stainless sissybar. Taking of from where we left off, I got had a good idea for the sissy bar pockets. I grabbed an old pair of 7/8" han...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Nozilla, Thanks. I use a MIG with no gas and fluxcore wire, it is less than ideal but it's what I got. The welds require lots of cleanup and splatter is guaranteed. The welds dress up okay with a flap disc - but there's a reason I haven't posted a picture of the underside    This w...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

All welded up and mostly ground back. All that remains are sissybar pockets to be welded on, but I need toget the sissybar material before I fabricate them. http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu180/originalninja/19ED71BA-9D19-4D1B-A7E4-5527A9DDB1CA-2727-00000907851C26D6_zps1d74bf14.jpg http://i645.p...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

I was fearing this moment, but today I started the process of adding a beading around the edges of the fender. I used 5/16 steel rod. The two sharp bends at the rear were done around some pipe to keep uniform radius, all the rest was bent by hand in a vice. Bend one section a small amount, slide the...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Prof, passenger comfort is not a consideration here, there are no passenger footpegs. It's purely for carrying stuff around on. I will however make a seat to suit the shape of the fender for aesthetics, but it'll never see a passenger. Heres the updates at close of shed this weekend. I trimmed some ...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Thanks a lot Neo, that's a really neat picture. Never seen one totally bare before - it answers a few questions. Got back into the shed this evening and worked on the tail light cowl. I made this arrangement out of 1.6mm sheet. It's just tacked up there for now, but it's looking like it'll stay. It ...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Well hey I'm back again with more pictures for ya'll I always liked the style of Crazy Frank fenders, their simple look and pull-out sissybar. However they push the seating position forward (not good for a tall bloke like me) and are now bringing mega prices online. I've seen some sell for over 1K, ...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Prof, the trans plate can't really be painted due to flatness. Thank's for the heads up on chromers, I want to chrome my exhauts and foot controls once they are done so I'll try em out. Might just get that trans plate chromed too.

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Hey guys, been down with the flu so not too much more has happened, until today when I got a big boost of motivation for some reason. I got so into wrenchin' that I forgot to take photos, but here is the end result from today's work. Polished the fork sliders Got the front tyre remounted on the fron...

Re: Shovelhead chopper rebuild. Picture intensive!

Well there ya go boys, another weekend done. I started paint on the frame today, hit it with kill-rust gloss black epoxy enamel from spraycans. Need to let it harden for a day then I'll do two further coats. I've painted frames with this stuff in the past, it does the job well. Because of the surfac...
