It's Friday, time for crazy talk?

Post by neale » Fri Jul 19, 2013 8:32 pm

OK, a messed up discussion on the Viagra forum has got a warped idea stuck in my head, and I wanna do it ( when I have a SIGNIFICANT amount of extra cash to fund the exercise ;^)

It started with one tool skiting about having a mate being able to cast custom cases, to put a dodgy kickstarter on the Viagra, then someone came up with this idea "if I had the means to cast my own cases, I'd be doing something far more radical and disturbed, like a two stroke V-4 made from a pair of Banshee motors or some such madness... :o: 700cc two stroke ballistic missile...", and he got me started down a path that is awfully tempting, if I had the money and could find a shop who could do the case work.

The XV engine origins were basically a pair of XT500 barrels and heads shoehorned into a V twin case, so MY crazy idea is that a pair of XT600 barrels and heads would make for an awesome engine if they could be mated to an early (81 or 82) TR1 case, the bore's the same, and the cylinder base gaskets aren't THAT different, so I'm thinking that a decent machine shop may be able to move the bolt holes that don't line up?
Image.

The XVS1100 crank is a straight swap into the XV cases, but the stroke's too short for the XT600 (75 against 84), on the other hand the XVS1300 crank is 83mm stroke, which could possibly be close enough to work if it'd go in. Ignition would be a challenge, but you can get adjustable digital units for the XVS1100, so one of them may be able to be made to work. High compression pistons, uprated cams and a bit of head work would be an obvious choice, exhaust would obviously be a one off (XT600s are 4 port, 4 valve heads), but intakes mightn't be that difficult, the factory Grizzly 600 2 into 1 manifold bolt on, so a pair of them could be mated to a pair of Khein or Mikuni downdraft carbs via 90 deg elbows. Theoretically, if it could be made to work, I think an uprated 8 valve, 8 port XTV 1200 V twin could put out twice what the native XV1000 did. (If I found a talented enough shop, it may even be possible to get the XT kickstart and decompression mechanism to fit and work as well)

As for the home for the FrankenYammi engine, an early XT600 frame, lengthened slightly and with the engine mounts moved to suit could do the job quite nicely, a late TT600 alloy swingarm is lighter, at least an inch longer and set up for a 270mm rear disk, as per my previous calcs, lowering the rear by 5" should push the rake out to about 35 degrees and something more could be done there, all in all, it could make for a very interesting, one of a kind, bike, and if the engine's '81-82 and the frame's '83, wouldn't it be before most of the regulation clamp downs?

So that's what's in MY head, what are the sane people doing? ;^)

Not sure what the sane people are up to but I am in Melbourne, the most radical thing on my mind is weather to chop me bonnie or not. Then again maybe a twin turbo diesel trike or sidecar set up could be fun. Brissie to Melbourne on two tanks of gas.

The Subaru turbo diesel would fit into a VW trike quite well, actually saw one of the VW trikes for the first time in ages outside my house a couple of days ago. The boxer diesels look pretty good, I've been thinking that the Kombi would go wekll with one.

I'm not sure it's right to help people along their path to insanity but I think you will find the spelling is John Trease of Trease Race Engineering. Cheers mark :D

No, Back in the day I had a lot of fun winding up the Virago riders by calling them Viagras, and I'm not enough of a hypocrite to stop calling them that now I have one.

Normally I'd agree that one shouldn't enable people in their afflictions, but in this instance I make an exception, thanks ;^)
