Looks like ol_750 has already shown you how they work. I just recently did a lowering on a shaft drive Moto Guzzi Nevada 750 that is now up for sale $4500 ONO (Ad soon in the for sale section) I lowered the bike by 5 inches just by putting on 3 inch lower back shocks and a custom seat as well as stripping of a heap of other parts from the bike. If it doesn't sell I will go the whole hog and do a full on custom job on it. Pictures below show the bike before and after. 8)

When I had my virago I just cut off the shock mounts and welded them on the rear of the frame, approximately 4inch to the rear off where they sit the now, it dropped the seat height by 3-4inch, only took 20mins cheap easy fix and you can use your original shocks

iv now sold the bike lol I did buy the 10inch shocks from the states il use them 1 day lol but right now I got work to do on my xs chopper and kz750 bobber needs finishing :) thanks for the info il build 1 latter to keep as both bikes I have are not good on my back (hard tailed) thanks again
