Swing arm has been cut and 3" added in. Solid rect steel bar has been milled. Cost $55 each. One end of each arm has been welded and next about to be done. Shocker brackets were cut off and will be reattached in front of axle.
Top mounts removed and tubing cut and bent up to provide a better sweeping line towards sissy bar.
New mount with reinforcing gussets front and back. They are 1½" higher. I initially tried mounts 1½" higher still (above tube, but chain then hits rear section of frame on full compression.
This set up drops rear end a couple of inches. With frame level (once we lengthen down tubes) lowest part of bike will a little under six inches. Only way to get it lower is to buy shorter shockers. Funny shaped bracket above guard is tack welded to frame and positions guard until brackets are made.
Mudguard has been swung forward and reshaped at rear. Side skirts of guard behind shockers has been wedged to bring guard in at front. Skirts will be shaped to produce perfect arc with axle as its centre
A couple of ½" blocks I keep specially as "high tech"spacers to work out mudguard clearance.
Spring removed from shocker so wheel comes up to highest position it wil ever reach. Leaving half an inch allows for tyre expansion at speed, pieces of gravel caught in thread and compression of rubber bushes in shokcers as they age.
This was final double check before welding on forward mudguard brackets. You'll see that rear bracket has been tacked in place. Stainless button heads fix mudguard to bracket. One inch squares of 3/16" steel bar are tapped and welded to underside of mudguard. Easy to attach. A loose bolt (happens sometime) can be more easily noted and can be tightened without having to remove wheel.
