Steff's xs #9... sissy bar finish, front foot pegs

Finishing off Steff' s job now with the last few bits and pieces.

Sissy Bar...

Steff doesn't like the abruptness of the change form frame to sissy bar and asked for a gentler transition. First I have to do final mounting which is an M8 bolt threaded into the sissy bar on each side where it slides into the frame.

The sissy bar is carefully set to the correct distance matching the thickness of the seat covering vinyl. then the verniers is used to mark the centre of the hole on each side. After centre punching, care is taken to get the drill running square...

An 8.5mm hole is drilled into the frame and a 7mm hole is drilled through the sissy bar and then threaded...

The sissy bar is then mounted and secured with M8 bolts , a measurement taken and two collars machined up. These are set on the sissy bar and tack welded. The backs of the collars are then ground down to begin the curve...

The gaps are filled with weld using the MIG and ground back. Low spots are built up with more weld...

Once the right shape is achieved with an angle grinder it is finished with the minibelt sander. Looks quite good I think.

Front Footpegs...

Steff bought some rubber and chrome footpegs from the net and we have waited 3 weeks for them to arrive. they are disappointing because their mounting system does not match Harley. They have massive 1/2" pivot holes and are very narrow. As a result I have to do a lot more milling on the forwards mounts and then have to machine up a set of stainless collars to size down the large holes to 3/16".

Forwards mount milled. Here you can also see the pegs and their big holes and the stainless collars on on the 3/16 bolt

Pegs mounted. The bolt pulls the collars tight against the mount, so the foot rests pivot on the 1/2" collars reducing wear.

Now I just have final welding on the frame and the rear guard to get into shape. I am expecting a spoked 16 x5 XS wheel on Tuesday so will have to wait til then, so Steff can keep on eye on proceedings.

In the meantime I will get back onto Simon's 250. Plus I also have a sporty to hard tail and another xs to lower the seat rails on.

Love the blending in of the sissy bar to frame. Top idea. will look great all painted up.

Should hit the road later this year on vintage plates......As for images seeing Photobucket has turned into Jewbucket and want to charge you $500 a year to share your images, why not enable the forums ability to upload photos. :?:
