I think it all sounds good but since I don't know that area (NSW, VIC or SA) all that well, it does not really matter which way we go as long as we do the GOR.

I like Cromags idea (Pg12) of just letting the route be a mystery to us all and the state organiser/s can sort it out and surprise us, all is good, providing we do the GOR. :)

Though we'd need to work out the details,
just thought I'd raise the question of whether
we should break the group down into smaller
groups of say no more than 3 or 4 riders?

This would make us less visible to the police
and less of an obstruction to other road users.
If we decided to, we could work out points
along the way where we could meet up as
one group again.

cheers, al :)

Al, big groups of bikes are of no consequence to the cops down here. The GOR is bike heaven, heavily travelled by bikes all the time.
As long as your bike's registered, they arent gunna hassle us.

Me and some mates are riding off down there on Saturday morning for a look see. About 20 of us.
Anyone is welcome to join us.

OMG
Am I living on a different planet?
I have no reason to hide from the law as I haven't done anything wrong and I would assume that most of those who joining us on this ride are the same. Why on earth are we worried about cops.

Unless of course you're planning on packing one of those old orchy bottles with a bit of copper pipe hanging out of it, then I understand your.......... paranoia........

Earth to Spokes

It's not about 'hiding from the cops'
It's about thinking about possibilities
and discussing options.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other.
I raised the question to get a bit of discussion
going. Like you, I want everyone to have a
great time.

As far as my bike's concerned, there's
nothing on it I'm going to get defected for.

Everyone might want consider 'fixing' anything
they might get defected for before the ride cause
it's more likely to be checked in a big group,
particularly with the attitude towards bike clubs
at the moment.

I can understand the attraction of riding in a large
group. But like I said, it doesn't worry me either
way I'll go with what the majority decide.

The only other concern is Andrew's observation
that a group, (18 so far from Qld and NSW)
with a number of older bikes setting the pace
may cause problems with traffic wanting to
travel at 110 plus.

What do others think?

cheers, al :)

Cops

Post by 78gold » Wed Dec 03, 2008 6:46 pm

I agree that a large bunch of riders will possibly cause some issues especially on any single lane highways we hit on older rigid bikes. 110klm an hour cars is goung to be the least of our worries as trucks will not like doing 90-100 kph in these areas.

My suggestion is just to use some common sense when on these types of roads and be prepared to adjust our group size/ riding habits accordingly. I dont think we are going to get 50+ riders from QLD and NSW (Be nice to though). It is a legitimate concern though as I want to have fun and enjoy the freedom of the open road but more importantly I want all of us to get there and back safely.

As for the cops, I dont know about you guys but these days if I am in the trans am, if they pull alongside, they see the grey hair and beard and drive off. I get the same reaction on the bike except then they wait till I get the helmet off.

getting older has to have some advantages.

Anyway as per Al I will basically moove with the consensus unless I strongly feel it is unsafe or not logical to do so.

That said I am really looking forward to the ride and getting down to Adelaide, where I havnt visited since the first F1 race, not to mention seeing you guys and the bikes you have built in the flesh.

a big group of bikes is what is attracting me , as stated by other posters if we use our commonsense we should not have any problems , do you think i should quieten down the pipes ( NOT )

One group for me, but maybe play it by ear once on the ride.

Well if your group is big enough you can go as slow as you like !
A truckie might hassle one or two slower bikes but not 20 or more.
There are no minimum speed limits.
Actually I prefer about 90km as the ideal travelling speed.
That basically on any bike whatever it's capable of I still find myself happiest at around 90.
If we are aiming at 500km a day that is 5.5 hours a day riding at 90 or say average 80kmh for 6.25 hours in the seat. Two roughly 3 hour stints a day should be doable.
As far as advising cops ahead of time if we were travelling on back roads through small towns etc yes maybe but it seems the plan is to just hoot down the expressways to SA so it's only the highway patrols will see us anyhow and after the first one they will call ahead to each other about us if they bother to notice at all.

Accomodation and Food

Post by XSChop » Wed Dec 03, 2008 9:51 pm

OK so what are the feelings on accomodation and food.
Are we talking

1/. Camp under a handy tree and risk lighting a fire to warm the beans in the can

2/. Book the local pub and eat Fish and Chips

3/. Members place, kip on the floor and eat Pizza

4/. Motels and Cheap restaraunts

5/. 5 star, valet parking and a massage each night

Or maybe all of the above at different times ?
