Police Liason

Post by XSChop » Mon May 11, 2009 5:50 pm

I have started this topic to clear up the issue of whether CA should liase with police along the ride in advance or not.

Although it's an issue most of us would like to just ignore and get on with the ride it is also one which could well spoil the ride altogether.

There has already been some discussion on this issue at Mega Ride 2009 South Australia sect.
and at Queensland Motor cycle council...
and maybe elsewhere

I am making this a Vote but please don't vote until we have discussed the ins and outs enough because I don't think you can change your vote once it's placed.

As I see it the extremes of the options are :-

NO don't tell them just wing it and hope we aren't pulled up and or defected etc too often

Yes just advise any and all police contacts from local cop to official channels.

Personaly, after much consideration, I think I am in favour of advising them but very carefully after putting in place certain sweeteners and wording the approach very carefully.
What these are and how it is done being very carefully prepared and presented.

But please all have a say and let's nut this out once and for all.

This issue is somewhat sticky. I suspect that no matter whether we notify them or not, we will be pulled up when riding en-masse. The only difference I can see is that notifying them allows them to plan their actions in advance....especially in SA. I so hate living in a Police State....

At present here in SA it doesn't really seem to matter whether the bike is legal or not, If they wanna get ya they will. I have heard of brand spanking new bikes with no modifications at all being defected, Mainly for exhausts which needs to go to regency park to be inspected with up to a 10 week wait.

Hopefully by the time this ride takes place things would of settled down a bit and people will be left alone but I would lean more on the side of liasing with at leat SAPOL and seeming cooperative with them.

A tough one indeed.
One half of me says screw the authorities we're just going on a ride, not going to kill anyone, not going to deliberately break any laws so stuff em.

However the "responsible and grown up" half of me (the smaller half), says that we should tell the stormtroopers cos i think either way we're gonna get pulled and checked/defected/abused/harassed/touched up etc etc etc

Dare i say it, it'd never happen in the old country........and no i won't go back!!

Cheers all. :D

Well here goes with some thoughts.
Just MHO of course.

If we are going to approach the police I think it should be via their Public Relations branches.

If we were running for a Charity it would help because they don't want to be seen to be getting in the way of charity. However even the outlaw clubs are pulling that one these days and we aren't really doing it for charity we are doing it for FUN !

If we could lead them to believe that the run was going to be publicised, filmed, monitored by the media in some way I think it would help.
The PR Branch "should" be trying to avoid bad publicity for the police and us getting pulled up gratuitously by all and sundry local cops would not look good for them. It could even be pushed as an Opportunity for them to show that they Can differentiate between Outlaw groups and valid public citizen activities.
So the more PR we can lead them to believe the run will generate the better I think.

So far I believe that Moree Ulysses have notified their local paper and plan to ride with us into and out of town.
And I have hear rumours of someone being interested in maybe filming some of the run.
More in this direction could IMHO get the cops actually On side !

Or and this is a wild one
We could formally ask them for an escort to protect us from any outlaw groups which may take umbrance to us passing through their territory.

PS in answer to a previous post there are currently 20 confirmed participants and given the time yet to pass I would think there could be up to 50 at some stages. Can't hide that !

I like the way that Phil is thinking.

Camera's at the ready.
But we might need one that actually looks like a proffessional outfit

Phil, in your last post you have said
"So far I believe that Moree Ulysses have notified their local paper and plan to ride with us into and out of town".

Have they asked if they can ride with us?
Notified their local paper??? Who the hell are they to notify their local paper to let them know that CA are having a run?
How many of them are CA members?
How many of them know anything about CA?
How many ride Chops?

:(

I have seen the boys in blue at work when they are informed of a run involving outlaw clubs and its not pretty ,high way patrol cars and bikes every were ,i was on my way back from a ride down south and passed a truck stop near taree and i swear you couldnt fit another copper in there and every head was facing me as i slowly cruised past with my better half on the back so i did the freindly thing and waved ,bad move ,within seconds the mirrors were lit up with flashing lghts and i was pulled over to my surprise he checked my licence and that was it he did mention that my gear was obstructing my rego plate and i thought here we go so i told him i would fix it there and then ,the next thing he said to me nearly floored me ,I have some tools in the car if you need to borrow them ,now that is the first time i have ever had a helping hand from the law when i have been pulled over riding a bike other than to help me lighten my wallet .I ride with an organisation called BACA Bikers Against Child Abuse and we have runs that can involve 100 to 200 bikes and we dont always inform the police and have not had a problem to date . The thing is they have got bigger fish to fry and 20 or thirty guys riding together doing the speed limit or less I would like to think would be no dramas although when we get to SA it could be a different story

You'd hope that after a while of testing new bikes with nothing wrong with them the local Transport Inspectors will have a gut full of it all and put pressure on the Cops to back off a bit! :D
