Brazing & prefered grip

Postby Prof » Thu Jul 14, 2011 9:23 pm

Brazed up a piece of 20mmm round bar with a 6mm hole through it onto a piece of 60mm X 3mm plate. I found the DHC with its narrow flame good in that the bronze did not want to spread over a wide area... much neater and less waste.

For general welding I am finding this position best. Instead of wrapping my had around the pistol grip, I am holding it dwon further. Less heat on my hand, a better angle of the tip and balances against the weight of the hoses well.

This grip may not be the prescribed one and I am only a learner, but it works well for me.

Good looking brazing, also you can use copper wire out of the household electric, not that i am suggesting you should tear open your walls to retrieve it, but you might have some old spare stuff lying around that you can strip the plastice off. Most of the time if the item being fixed is clean you dont need flux for brazing.

It does not matter where you hold the torch if your hand is more comfortable where you have it in pic then thats great, just be aware that you might knock the oxy control valve, so if it is a problem then just tighten the nut behind it to make it firmer (I could do a joke here, but I wont :). I use thin pigskin TIG gloves when welding, this keeps the heat at a sensible temperature on my hands but another thing that some people do is use the straight extension to get some distance away, there are heat shields available, but I found like most people that they are a waste of time and gloves or the straight extension is the answer regarding radiated heat on hands.
