New requirement in NSW (Sydney at least)

Post by neale » Wed Oct 17, 2012 9:23 pm

Riding home from a mate's place today I stopped at the servo to fill up, and a cop who was there when I pulled in came up to give me a couple of friendly warnings (actually quite friendly).

One of the warnings was for the pod filter on the bike, I presume this is a new requirement as nothing was said the last time the cops went over the bike, or it may just be enforced in Sydney. Apparently they can issue a defect ticket for uncovered pod filters, due to the supposed danger of flames from a backfire through the carb. The requirement at this point was stated as being that the air filter must have a cover to contain the flames. From what he was saying it sounded like it was created to give them something ping the riceboy boyracer types in their dodgy cars, but they won't let that stop them booking bikes. I did a search on eSlag for air filter covers, and the ones that showed were just tinted plastic covers screwed onto the end of the air filter, with a row of air holes around the top, so I'm going to make up something similar and put it on.

He also made a comment about the exhaust note (not the first), and warned me not to open it up where people may hear (said he was friendly about it), and had a chat about the Viagra.

Anyway, if others have K&N style pod filters on their bikes, may be worth seeing about putting a cover on them to save a ticket, in Sydney anyway.

FWIW

HE didn't give a lot of detail, came over to talk and warn me that I could get pinged on those two points if another cop was in the mood to write tickets, and complement the Viagra.

Given that he was being nice and I knew the pipes were borderline I certainly didn't want to get adversarial with him, sorry.
